In 2023, Sacred Heart SVdP Conference completed 311 Home Visits, providing direct help to 668 neighbors in need. Through the Sacred Heart Conference and Home Visitors, over $53,000 in direct financial assistance was provided to help our neighbors remain housed.
At St. Vincent de Paul, we specialize in providing personalized assistance through our Home Visits. We prioritize helping individuals and families maintain stable housing situations. Through our personal approach, our Home Visitors gain a unique perspective that enables them to offer additional assistance that may be needed, like food or clothing and furniture vouchers.
Our primary focus is on preventing homelessness by providing direct assistance, including help with utility bills and rent when eviction is imminent. When individuals or families in need reach out to us through our Help Line, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers visit them in their homes to determine how we can best assist them.
By contributing to the Sacred Heart Conference, you’ll be offering direct financial aid and support to a local family facing hardship. Your donation makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.
Thank you for helping us help others.
Sacred Heart Home Visit Stories
One of the neighbors we helped is a single mother with two daughters who works full-time as a restaurant manager. Her net pay is about $2,600, but her current wages are garnished $400 a month to repay a Federal covid overpayment. Our home visitors helped her with $250 toward her rent. Although it is a small amount compared to the totality of her financial woes, she was very thankful and emotional because she had never had to ask for help before.
We visited Nora who recently fled from an unsafe home situation with her two children and lost everything. The children are currently living with relatives. Nora found work right away but got sick and was laid off. She has applied for jobs close to home because she does not have a car. When we visited Nora, we sat on the floor; there was no furniture in her apartment. To help lighten the heavy burden on Nora’s shoulder, we helped pay part of her rent. We also requested some furniture and gave her vouchers for houseware and linen from our thrift store. We took time to talk with her and let her know about other helpful resources in Boise. At the end of our visit, we prayed for peace and safety for the family, and continued to help rebuild their lives.
We recently helped a man who was moving into a halfway house and needed help with the first rent. The day our home visitors met with him was a day of celebration, as it was the first time in over 30 years that he was able to stay sober for more than nine months. We feel that the rental assistance will help him continue his success. We recently helped pay rent for a woman whose hours were reduced due to her cancer treatment.
She told our home visitors that isolation was the hardest part of being sick, and she appreciate their visit and their prayers. We used CRS Rice Bowl funds to pay a portion of rent for a man who was unable to work for several weeks due to hospitalization for asthma and three strokes. We helped a woman who was injured at work and is waiting for her workman’s compensation payments. She was released from prison a year ago after 17 years. Thankfully, her landlord believes in giving second chances. She is looking forward to her baptism the next month.
Our home visitors met a young couple and their five-month-old baby boy who had heart surgery out of state to repair several holes in his heart found after birth. The couple recently moved to Boise from an outlying community before the child's birth for a new and better job. Due to complications with the baby’s birth (he was born premature), and the subsequent surgery, the father was not able to start his new job and ended up losing it. He was unemployed for about two months. Rent is $1,100/mo., utilities included. We helped with a portion of one month’s rent; they got help from family members for the balance. They had little to no furniture and sold off a few personal possessions to make ends meet. We made a furniture request/voucher for sofa and end table, plus a clothing voucher for the baby and mother. They were very touched and grateful for our presence and help. The father texted us two weeks later to thank us for the furniture received and to let us know he had gotten a new job and was getting back on his feet.
